I just nearly finished my first Athenian heavy Hoplite unit ... apart from two bases as I was running out of sand, believe it or not. I have in mind later to double the sizes, but for now 1unit shall be a 120mm x 60 front and three 40x40 as back up or to spread out. I like one set piece of a frontal base as one can give it a little bit more of the phalanx feel to it. I'm thinking of whatever rules I will use, it must have the "othismus"(push of the pike of the antiquity so to speak) depicted correctly as well as the right-leaned movement of greek phalanxi, the sprint of the greeks out of formation into an attack, the more vulnerable right flank, fire and evade tactics of the light infantry (peltasts) and the light cavalry, the praying before battle, the differences between slim and deep formations the differences between Spartans and the rest of the gang ... I'm reading a book atm Owen Rees‘ "Great Battles of The Classical Greek World" ... very exiting stuff ... ... will get to Portobello beach and upload sand ... and then continue to paint pike bearers of different era ... :)
Wonderful details on this phalanx unit, awesome job!

Thank you very much Sir! Will do/ have to do more ... :)
DeleteI really like them - the dynamic of the unit works perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThanks Oli! The thought behind it was to create 2 small (portable) armies of the Peleponnesian/Corinthian etc. Wars maybe 4-6 of these heavy and light each side, then plus 2x6 single Peltats a s skirmishers, plus 2 light horse each ... and some good rules (with adaption of course) ... voila!
DeleteLovely looking hoplites, nice range of colours.
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain! will keep up the efforts :)
